When Ann Mitchell (Barbara
Stanwyck) is fired from her job as a newspaper columnist she writes a 'John
Doe' letter claiming he will jump off the city's highest building on Christmas
Eve. The letter boosts the newspaper's circulation and Ann gets her job
back. To show it isn't a cheap publicity campaign they have to find a 'real'
John Doe and this is when Long John Willoughby (Gary Cooper) joins the
picture. Even today Meet John Doe remains a relevant story of media
and political manipulation.
